About Us
Who We Are
BhASA – The Bhartiya Association of Sequential Arts – is India’s first organized body dedicated to comics and sequential storytelling.
We are a tribe of storytellers: artists, writers, publishers, educators, and enthusiasts who believe in the power of visual narratives to inspire, connect, and preserve culture.
Our mission is to create the support system that Indian comics deserve — from archiving history to enabling new voices, from influencing policy to building global collaborations.
Why We Exist
For too long, comics in India have been celebrated by readers but overlooked by institutions. Comic creators often find themselves isolated, with limited access to funding, policy support, or global platforms. Countries like Japan and South Korea have built thriving comic industries supported by government policies and cultural initiatives. India, with its vast storytelling heritage, deserves the same recognition.
BhASA was created to bridge this gap — to give Indian comics a home, a voice, and a future.
Our Vision
- To create residencies, grants, and insurance support for artists.
- To make Indian comics a recognized art form both nationally and internationally.
- To archive and chronicle the history of Indian comics for future generations.
- To bring Indian storytelling to global stages, from Angoulême in France to cultural exchanges across Asia.
- To promote diverse languages and genres, ensuring every corner of India is represented.
What Makes BhASA Different
- Unlike existing platforms, BhASA is not just a community — it is a structured movement.
- We work with policy makers to integrate comics into education and cultural forums.
- We provide legal and financial guidance to protect creators’ work and livelihood.
- We build international networks so Indian artists have a seat at the global table.
- We celebrate both heritage and innovation, honoring legendary creators while nurturing new voices.
The Story Behind the Name
“BhASA” means language in Sanskrit — and language is at the heart of storytelling.
Our logo, inspired by ancient cave drawings, reflects the timeless Indian tradition of using visuals to tell stories. Just like our ancestors etched their narratives on stone walls, today’s creators continue that journey through comics and sequential art.
Join the Tribe
BhASA is open to all: creators, students, institutions, and fans.
Together, we can create a thriving ecosystem where Indian comics are preserved, promoted, and celebrated around the world.
